About This Opportunity
The African Telecommunications Union (ATU) is running the fifth ATU Africa Innovation Challenge, a continental competition for a USD 60,000 pool prize. This edition is open to academic innovation ecosystems: innovation hubs, incubation centres, student developer communities and clubs, and research or technical institutions that support innovators building AI-based software solutions.
Applicants present both the innovation and the institutional ecosystem behind it. Recognition focuses on the strength of the environment supporting innovators, not just one promising product.
> 📌 Who can apply: this is an institution-level application, not an individual one. Students and developers should speak to their university innovation hub, incubator, department or developer club about applying. An institution does not need to be an ATU member to take part.
Eligibility Requirements
Each applicant ecosystem must meet all five requirements:
- Institutional connection: hosted within, or formally connected to, an academic or training institution in an ATU Member State
- Software focus: supports innovators working on AI-based software solutions with public, commercial, social or institutional value
- Named coordination: has a mentor network, academic supervisor, innovation lead, coordination structure or institutional focal point
- Evidence of support: can show how it provides technical, research, product-development or mentorship assistance
- Learner nomination capacity: can nominate learners or teams for any partner-supported training or certification pathway
What You Get / Benefits
| Place | Prize |

- Software, cloud services, developer platforms and testing resources
- Equipment needed to develop, test or deploy the innovation
