About This Opportunity
ILIAD is a nonprofit organisation dedicated to advancing foundational AI alignment research. They run two flagship programmes for researchers with strong technical backgrounds who want to work on the hardest problems in AI safety. The ILIAD Intensive is a four-week, in-person, full-time course focused on foundational AI alignment research. The ILIAD Fellowship is a three-month, full-time, mentored research programme in applied mathematics for AI alignment — held in London or the San Francisco Bay Area. Both programmes are free to attend and come with financial support. The November cohort deadline is September 21, 2026.
Programme 1: ILIAD Intensive
A four-week, full-time, in-person course for people with strong mathematical or theoretical computer science backgrounds.
Eligibility:- Strong background in mathematics, physics, or theoretical computer science
- Typically pursuing or having completed a graduate degree in a relevant field
- Demonstrated research ability and motivation to work in AI alignment
- A PhD is not required
- $5,000 travel-and-housing allowance
- No tuition fees
- Office space at the programme venue
- Lunch and dinner five days a week
Programme 2: ILIAD Fellowship
A three-month, full-time, mentored research programme in applied mathematics for AI alignment.
Eligibility:- PhD, postdoctoral, or equivalent research experience in mathematics, theoretical physics, or theoretical computer science
- Ability to conduct largely self-directed research
- Strong interest in AI alignment research
- $6,000 USD per month travel-and-housing allowance
- Three months of full-time mentored research in London or the San Francisco Bay Area
- Close mentorship from established AI alignment researchers
- Support for developing research proposals and concrete research outputs
How to Apply
Key Deadlines
- September 21, 2026 — Fellowship application deadline for the November cohort
- October 19, 2026 — Fellowship deadline for the December cohort
- Intensive applications for November 2026 are still being accepted
Tips
- Apply to the Fellowship even if you are not yet a PhD holder — ILIAD explicitly states that "equivalent research experience" qualifies and they tailor compensation accordingly.
- Your research background matters more than your institution — ILIAD is looking for people who can produce rigorous technical work in mathematical AI alignment.
- September 21 is very close. If your background fits, apply immediately.
