About This Opportunity

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation's Research Fellowship is one of the world's most prestigious postdoctoral research awards, open to highly qualified international researchers from all disciplines who wish to conduct long-term research projects at German research institutions. Unlike many scholarships, the Humboldt Fellowship operates on a rolling basis — with no fixed deadline — and fellows can conduct their research at any host institution in Germany of their choosing. The fellowship is highly regarded globally and opens doors to Germany's world-class research ecosystem.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Hold a doctoral degree (PhD) completed no more than 12 years before the application — the fellowship specifically targets early to mid-career postdoctoral researchers
  • Demonstrated outstanding research track record — typically evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Identify a German host researcher and institution willing to invite and host you (a formal invitation letter is required)
  • Open to all nationalities — Ghanaian and African researchers are eligible and the Foundation actively promotes diversity

What You Get / Benefits

  • Monthly stipend of €3,170 for social science and humanities fellows, and €3,170–€4,465 for natural scientists and engineers (varies by career stage)
  • Fellowships last between 6 and 24 months — you choose the duration based on your research plan
  • Family allowances for fellows with spouses and children
  • Return travel allowance to and from Germany
  • German language course support
  • Permanent membership in the Humboldt Network — a global community of over 30,000 former fellows including Nobel laureates

How to Apply

  • Visit humboldt-foundation.de and review the Research Fellowship guidelines carefully
  • Identify a German researcher and institution willing to host your project and secure their formal letter of invitation
  • Develop a detailed, academically compelling research proposal for your planned stay in Germany
  • Submit your application through the Humboldt Foundation's online portal — applications are accepted year-round
  • The review process takes approximately 4–7 months from submission to a funding decision
  • Tips

    • The Humboldt network is arguably as valuable as the fellowship itself — Humboldt alumni include 59 Nobel laureates, and membership confers lifelong association with this community.
    • Applications are reviewed throughout the year (no fixed deadline), but given the 4–7 month review timeline, plan your submission date based on when you need your funding to start.
    • A strong publication record is close to mandatory for competitive applications — if you are early in your postdoctoral career with limited publications, consider building your record before applying.

⏰ Rolling deadline — applications accepted year-round. Allow 4–7 months for the review process. Apply as early as your research plan and host arrangements allow.
