About This Opportunity
The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship (SGES) is offered annually by the Swiss Confederation to support outstanding international researchers pursuing PhD studies, postdoctoral research, or short-term research stays at Swiss universities and institutions. The scholarship is part of Switzerland's commitment to international academic cooperation and is open to applicants from a wide range of countries, including several across Africa.
Eligibility Requirements
- Hold a relevant Master's degree (for PhD applicants) or a PhD (for postdoctoral applicants)
- Be nominated by, or apply through, your country's Swiss embassy or designated national agency — applications generally go through your home country's official channel, not directly to Switzerland
- Strong academic record and a clear, well-defined research proposal aligned with a Swiss host institution
- Identify and secure interest from a potential Swiss supervisor or host institution before applying
What You Get / Benefits
- Monthly stipend ranging from CHF 1,920 to CHF 3,500 depending on your academic level (PhD vs postdoc)
- Tuition fee exemption or reduction at your host Swiss institution
- Contribution toward health insurance costs during your stay
- Access to Switzerland's world-class research infrastructure and academic networks
How to Apply
Tips
- Securing a Swiss host supervisor's agreement before applying is essential — most successful SGES applications already have a confirmed institutional connection in Switzerland.
- Applications must go through your home country's official nomination channel, so contact the Swiss embassy in Accra early to understand Ghana's specific process and internal deadline.
- A focused, well-defined research proposal — rather than a broad area of interest — significantly improves your chances, since reviewers assess feasibility alongside academic merit.
